Films: The Lost Continent (1968)
Alias: Killer Seaweed, Giant Cephalopod, Pit Monster, Giant Crustacean, Giant Sea Scorpion
Type: Ancient
Location: Ocean
Height/Weight: Ranges from that of regular seaweed to that of a small building.
Affiliation: Neutral
Summary: If the previous trip to a "lost continent" left you bored out of your skull, then fear not today. This one contains no rock climbing, and is ten times more visceral and packed with bizarre creatures.
History: The Sargasso Sea has always been a place of wonder. Just ask the Spanish conquistadors stuck there with the various deadly invertebrates they either learned to avoid or use to their advantage. Seriously, you can't even walk anywhere without tying yourself to balloons to avoid awakening the carnivorous seaweed. You can imagine their hospitality when a group of foreigners showed up.
Notable Kills: Nothing special.
Final Fate: The only creatures shown to die are the pit monster (burned alongside the conquistador's ship) and the crustacean (shot in the head while battling a sea scorpion).
Powers/Abilities: None.
Weakness: Anything conventional.
Scariness Factor: 3-While the idea of killer seaweed is bizarrely genius, especially for a place like the Sargasso Sea, many beasts are hampered by shoddy puppetry and complete wobbliness. At one point, the scorpion goes tumbling down a cliff like a fool right in front of the crustacean. Dignity went down a bit there.
Trivia: -The Sargasso Sea, located in the north Atlantic, is home to vast piles of floating seaweed for its inhabitants, and water too calm to really fit in with the rest of the ocean.
-This film was based on the 1938 novel by Dennis Wheatley, "Uncharted Seas".
